INTRODUCTION


Course overview




This course is designed to provide the students with knowledge of Elementary to Intermediate levels of English, either actively or passively.  The steps in delivering the subjects is first by providing basic English (structure and vocabulary), followed by encouraging the students to speak in daily conversation topics and finally, encouraging them understanding the contents of text books, research papers, reports, etc. written in English.  Besides, the students are also encouraged to practice their English speaking capabilities through interactive learning process.  At the final stage, the students are guided to reveal their proficiency in expressing ideas or opinion into a short paragraph written in English.
This course comprises the following subjects:  the appropriate use of verb to be, using tenses correctly, active and passive voices, the use of adjectives and adverbs, the formation and use of gerunds, understanding the participle and participial phrases, making compound words, constructing compound sentences, and constructing and using complex sentences.  In the writing section, the discussion is emphasized on the formulation of a sentence(s), paragraph writing (topic sentence, controlling ideas, and conclusion), paragraph development using details, examples, illustrations, definitions and causative effects, and thesis sentence and writing a short essay.
The delivery method is through interactive lecture and discussion in the class room, coupled with some take-home assignments on special topics as a compulsory structured assignment.  The assignment should be completed individually, and a feedback will be provided by the teacher in returning the assignments.

General instructional aims

Students understand the basic principles of English, and are able to communicate orally using simple Standard English.  Besides, this course is aimed at providing students with knowledge in writing short essays, establishing their capability to understand the contents of a scientific paper written in English, and re-express them in the same language (paraphrase) or in Bahasa Indonesia correctly and appropriately.

The student evaluation is based on the following components (the portion is tentative):
